Ultimate New Puppy Checklist: Puppy Parenthood Unleashed

Hi sunshines:) Bringing home a puppy is a heartwarming experience, but it sure is a journey of ups and downs! The best way to keep everyone in the home happy is to make sure you’re organized and prepared for the newest addition to your family! A new puppy checklist is just what you need!

Before getting Bowser, I was a rookie to the realm of dog ownership. I wanted to educate myself on what to expect, what I need and all the ins and outs of having a pup, so I found a book to help me prepare for welcoming Bowser home! I went on a shopping spree for Bowser, grabbing everything I thought we needed—totally overboard! But after ten months, we’ve sorted the must-haves from the waste of money, and we’re here to tell you our thoughts!

Bowser and I have got you covered with a guide to the ultimate puppy essentials and what is actually necessary! Our 2024 New Puppy Checklist includes the necessities, but also gives you some little tips that we feel helped a ton! Here is our new puppy checklist linked with your soon to be favorite products!!

The Ultimate New Puppy Checklist

  1. Dog Bowls

Having a dedicated spot for your pup to chow down and drink their water is a game-changer. And guess what? Stainless steel bowls are super easy to clean and they are also highly effective at preventing bacteria buildup.

  1. Training Treat Pouch

From the very start, rewarding your pup is an absolute must. It not only sets the tone for a sweet relationship with your pup, but also helps them recognize that when they do something good, they get a treat. This can happen at the most unexpected times and a treat pouch really comes in handy during times like that!

  1. Clicker

One thing that has been a game changer in the training journey is the magic of the clicker. Once they hear the clicker, they realize they have nailed the trick and a tasty reward is coming their way. To effectively reinforce positive behavior in your pup, immediate acknowledgment is crucial. The clicker serves as a prompt, letting your puppy know that they’ve performed correctly, allowing you more time to provide a treat.

  1. Potty Bells

These are the game-changers in the word of potty training. Introducing Bowser to the potty bells was one of the best moves in his potty training journey. There is no more guessing or missed cues from your pup trying to let you know they needs to go outside. He knows that the bells means he is going outside! But watch out! Your pup might outsmart you like Bowser did to me. Don’t be surprised if they start ringing for “going outside” on their own terms.

  1. Chew Toys

One thing I wish I knew sooner was the power of chew toys. If your pup is teething non stop and their only target is your hand, putting a chew toy in their mouth with let them know that they toy is what they are supposed to be chewing on. Eventually, your hand won’t be something they go for anymore!

  1. Crate/Crate Bed

Crate training is a total turning point for many pups! It’s all about creating a safe space where they can chill, snooze and just be by themselves. Plus, it’s handy for when you need to leave them and you don’t have to worry about them getting into anything they shouldn’t be. Living in an apartment made me worried about him barking in the crate so I got a camera to watch him when he was in there and a sound machine to drown out any noisy distractions from the neighbors. A crate is a must on the new puppy checklist!

  1. Bed

Every pup deserves their own chill zone! Whether it’s a plush dog bed, a designated spot on the couch, or something completely unique, creating a special space for your pup is key!

  1. Leash

Every pup needs a leash and should be leash trained. Trust me, there will be countless situations where having your pup leash-trained will be a total lifesaver. Don’t forget your treat pouch and clicker- they’re leash training essentials for keeping your pup in line!

  1. Collar/Harness

Having a collar or harness with your dog’s ID tags is a must-have. The collar and harness are also important for your daily walks!

  1. Poop Bags

Let’s talk about the not-so-glamourous side of pup parenthood- picking up poop! It might not be glamorous, but it’s a must to keep the streets clean and everyone smiling.

  1. Wipes

You never know when you’ll need one of these so getting them before you actually need them will be incredibly helpful! From unexpected messes to quick clean-ups, wipes are your go-to solution for keeping your pup and their surroundings fresh and clean. Whether it’s muddy paws or a little accident, having wipes on hand ensures you’re always prepared for any puppy mishap that comes your way.

  1. Backseat Cover

When it comes to road trips with your furry co-pilot, creating a space in the back will be important. Investing in a seat cover not only keeps your pup cozy but also safeguards your seats from any unexpected messes. And remember, always buckle up your pup before hitting the road! If your pup is a massive chewer, a chew proof seat belt works wonders and no more escaping the backseat shenanigans for your furry friend!

  1. Puzzles

Let’s talk about those days when your pup seems to have chugged a gallon of puppy power juice. Puzzles are the ultimate lifesaver for busy pet parents. Plus, mental stimulation is so important for our pups in general!!!

Here are a few different puzzles that Bowser LOVES:
